“It has been both busy and exciting during my first week at headquarters. My department has been enthusiastic and helpful in getting me established. I hope to provide fresh ideas that will help the communications office move the Society toward the future.”
The staff welcomes Linda and is helping her learn the ropes. As Communications Services Administrator, Linda is responsible for the Society’s publications and electronic communications. She is helping “advance the Society.”

Afghanistan Project Ends
U. S. Fund for UNICEF has announced the end of the Afghanistan Project effective June 30, 2009. Dr. Carolyn Rants appointed Cathy Daugherty, Morag Gundy, Sigrún Klara Hannesdóttir, and Phyllis Hickey to investigate possible projects to replace this effort.
Dr. Rants said, “We have had a heartfelt attachment to helping teachers in Afghanistan and regret the project’s ending.”
The U. S. Fund for UNICEF notified the Society that it is currently the only group supporting the Afghanistan Project, and they could not find another Non-Government Organization to help. They have reorganized and are now requiring a commitment of $50,000 a year for their support of a project. Delta Kappa Gamma collected nearly $20,000 for the Afghanistan project this past year.
Ms. Hickey said, “The committee is gathering information and suggestions from all of our members. Please call me at headquarters or email me (phyllish@deltakappagamma.org) with your recommendations by September 15.”
Q- What if my chapter/state has already adopted the Afghan Project for 2009-2010?
A- If you have collected money and can send it to the U.S. Fund for UNICEF by June 30, 2009, please do so and see if we can reach $200,000 for donations to the project since 2003!
Or you could hold your donations and wait for future announcements.

Happy Anniversary ΔΚΓ! Happy Birthday ΔΚΓ!
80 years and counting

No matter how you look at it, 80 years warrants a celebration.
Founded May 11, 1929, by Dr. Annie Webb Blanton, The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International now reaches into 16 countries with approximately 106,000 members. We’ve come a long way since Dr. Blanton began with 12 founders. We have 7 purposes. We donate more than $3 million to further education each year. AND we are more than numbers…
Margot Silk Forrest writes about a student who revered the work of author Robert Heinlen. She approached him and said, “Your books have done so much for me. I want to give something back.”
Heinlen shook his head and responded, “You don’t give back; you give forward.”
That is what the Society does. We give forward. In our efforts to support our purposes, we find ways to empower those with whom we share our gifts, our talents. We encourage them to do the same.
Happy Birthday, women of vision and action! You are advancing the Society.

Anne-Marie Carlson, New York, has been elected vice-chair of the Executive Committee of Non-Governmental Organizations Associated with the United Nations Department of Public Information. Engaging the Disengaged Receives Educator's Award
Engaging the Disengaged: How Schools Can Help Struggling Students Succeed (Corwin Press) by Dr. Lois Brown Easton won the nod as the 2009 Educator’s Award recipient from The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International. Dr. Easton directs the reader to the moral imperative of educating all students, specifically those students needing the most help. They are the “dis” kids: disinterested, disappointed, disenchanted, discredited, disenfranchised. This book describes practices and changes that educators have made to the culture of schools to better serve all learners, especially those who are disengaged. Easton’s book, Engaging the Disengaged, is a worthy contribution with a potential to influence educational practices. (continued…)
Dr. Brogden to Edit Bulletin
Lace Marie Brogden, Ph.D. (Alpha Chapter, Saskatchewan), has agreed to edit the Bulletin for the 2009-2010 academic year. An assistant professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of Regina, Canada, since 2007, Dr. Brogden has worked in language teacher education for the past 10 years. She began her professional life as a French Immersion teacher and then worked as Evaluation Coordinator in the French curriculum development branch of Saskatchewan's Ministry of Education.
She has recently contributed chapters to scholarly books in the areas of curriculum, language teacher education and language policy, and has published several articles and reviews in refereed journals such as Quantitative Inquiry (US), Qualitative Research (UK) and the Canadian Journal of Applied Linguistics. Dr. Brogden currently serves as chair of the International Scholarships Committee and has been a member of the Golden Gift Fund and International Research committees.
In her application, she stated her main priorities will be to continue to adhere to quality standards in the manuscript preparation process, to expand the editorial presence, and, with the collaboration of the editorial board, to promote increased academic standards for Bulletin articles, coupled with support for members interested in publishing scholarly work, by developing a revise-and-resubmit process.
The Bulletin will celebrate its 75th anniversary in November 2009.

The linked form asks for the information needed to complete the process, so we can send a check to the member at an appropriate address.

During the last several years, the southeast has been devastated with hurricanes, storms, tornadoes, flooding and high winds. The International Emergency Fund helps to financially support any Delta Kappa Gamma member who has suffered loss from any of these natural disasters. Members from Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Florida, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia gathered recipes for specific events, holidays and celebrations that are unique to the eleven states that have come together in this cookbook. Profits from this book will go to the International Emergency Fund and FloridaState Emergency Fund. Florida has spearheaded the efforts for this project.
Here are a few gift ideas for the cookbook: speakers for Delta Kappa Gamma meetings, neighbor gifts, gifts for new chapter members, gifts for new teachers in your school or county, holiday gifts for family, principal or boss gifts, thank you gifts, weddings, birthdays, gift for family members or friend, or use for drawings at meetings....Keep in mind that this is ?a cookbook that serves others." Building the Future for Women Educators and Education [05/19/08]
Informa tion and background about your dues
As a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, you understand that the future of our educational system depends on the development, support and leadership of women educators. You also know that education is a long-term investment, and that even the smallest economic shifts can mean escalating costs, shrinking budgets and difficult financial decisions. We have tried every means to do more with less, but we have come to a point where we must ask our members to step forward and invest proactively in the future of the Society. Click here for information.
Chapter Presidents Write Elevator Speeches [2-9-09]
Ever been asked "Who is this group?" when you're at a meeting or convention? The "elevator speech" offers a quick response (about the time it takes for the elevator doors to open again). In the January/February issue of the Presidents' Page, we asked chapter presidents to send us their elevator speeches. Several samples from the 2008 International boards and committee chairs Planning Meeting were included in that issue. Our first response is from Florida....
